HCM CITY — Cai luong [reformed opera composer Quy Sac, who died last week at the age of 86, will be remembered in a special one-off show next Friday at Tran Hung Dao Theatre.
Organised by his family, friends, colleagues and artists in cai luong circles, the show features excerpts from Sac’s famous cai luong dramas and vong co songs which have won over audiences for many decades.
Dramas include Ma hong phan bac (An Ill-fated Woman), Khi rung moi sang thu (When Fall Arrives in the Forest), San hau (Betrayal and Loyalty at San Hau Citadel) among others.
Vong co songs include Co gai ban den hoa giay (A Paper Flower Lantern Selling Girl), Nau banh dem xuan (Cooking Rice Cake on the Eve of Tet) and Truoc ngay xuat gia (Mother’s Teachings to a Bride-to-be) among others. The show brings together two generations of artists, including Le Thuy, Minh Vuong, Ut Bach Lan, Dieu Hien and Phuong Quang who are in their late 60s and younger ones including Vu Linh, Thanh Ngan and Thanh Thanh Tam.
All the artists in the shows will perform for free as a tribute to the composer whose compositions helped to build up their careers.
Proceeds of the show will be donated to homeless retiring artists living in a shelter in District 8, a poverty relief fund in Sac’s neighbourhood in District 4 and impoverished people in his home province of Binh Duong.
The show is directed by director Mong Long, Sac’s eldest son who is working at the Nguyen Dinh Chieu Film Studio. — VNS
