Artists to sax up Ha Noi
HA NOI — Phan Anh Dung, saxophonist and teacher at Ha Noi College of Arts, will perform this Sunday at the Ha Noi Opera House in commemoration of his first performance that occurred 10 years ago.
The Viet Nam Association of Musicians and MIVA Media are promoting the show, Jazz Viet.
Dung will perform together with Vietnamese artists such as Son Thach, Hoang Long, Vu Tu Cau and Viet Dung and his foreign students.
The musicians will perform a number of Vietnamese songs composed by Tran Tien, Trinh Cong Son, Pho Duc Phuong, Tu Linh and Doan Chuan in the jazz style.
They will also play classic jazz songs such as Autumn Leaves (J Koma), Cantaloupe Island (Herbie Hancock), Summertime (G Gershwin) and The Preacher (Horace Silver).
Dung will also perform songs that he has composed.
He hopes to please his foreign audience and wants to help the Vietnamese in attendance to establish a comparative view on foreign and Vietnamese jazz.
"They may realise new beauty in familiar songs when they are performed in the style of jazz," he says.
On the occasion, Dung will release his eighth DVD entitled Lam Quen (Making Acquaintance) in which he plays romantic songs with a saxophone.
"I have recorded eight albums and played at jazz performances at home and abroad," he says, "I have also taught saxophone to many Vietnamese and foreign students."
"Whenever I hold my saxophone, I feel happy," he said.
