HA NOI — Looking for Eric, a comedy by director Ken Loach, will kick off the UK Film Week in Ha Noi this Friday.
On the same day, Scoop staring Scarlett Johansson, will start the week of in HCM City.
The film week, organised by the British Council in Viet Nam, will showcase different aspects of contemporary UK life and culture.
The event explore contemporary British life that were shot on location in London.
The films, that explores themes such as teenage angst to mid-life crises, see chance encounters between strangers that develop into something much more, said Simon Beardow, deputy director of the British Council.
Written by award-winning writers and directors such as Ken Loach, Mike Leigh and Woody Allen; they feature a host of stars such as Dame Judy Dench, Cate Blanchett and Eric Cantona.
Happy-Go-Lucky, Scoop, Somers Town and Looking for Eric were nominated for prizes at the BAFTA Film Awards, the Oscars, the Berlin Film Festival and the Venice Film Festival.
Happy-Go-Lucky, a story about a 30-year-old primary school teacher who loves her job, friends and her freedom, was directed by Mike Leigh. It follows her life over a few weeks in spring as she learns to drive and embarks on a new romance.
It won the best actress and at the Berlin International Film Festival 2008 and best supporting actor and actress at the British Independent Film Award 2008. It was also nominated for best writing at the Academy Award Oscar 2009.
Shane Meadows’ film Somers Town won best Young British Performer of the Year at the London Critics Circle Film Awards 2009. It also won best actor at the Tribeca Film Festival and best new British feature film at the Edinburgh International Film Festival.
Choi Voi (Adrift), a film by Vietnamese film director Bui Thac Chuyen, won an award at the recent Venice Film Festival. It is about family values, love and contemporary life in Ha Noi. It will also be screened during the film week.
The films, which will be screened with Vietnamese voice-overs and in the original language, will run from Friday to December 17 at the Ha Noi Cinematheque, 22A Hai Ba Trung and Galaxy Cinema, 230 Nguyen Trai, District 1.
Screenings in Ha Noi will begin at 7pm and 9pm.
In HCM City, screenings with original versions will start at 3pm on Saturday and Sunday, and at 5pm from Monday to Wednesday. Screenings with Vietnamese dubbing start at 5pm on Saturday and Sunday, and at 7pm from Monday to Friday.
Free tickets can be collected from the cinemas and from the British Council at 20 Thuy Khue Street, Ha Noi, and 25 Le Duan Street, District 1, HCM City. — VNS
