Film fest rolls out red carpet in HCM City

HCM CITY — The 16th Viet Nam Film Festival opened with a ceremony at HCM City’s White Palace conference hall on Tuesday, with 99 feature films, documentaries and cartoons competing for this year’s Golden Lotus awards.

Fifteen feature films, 10 fewer than last year, are entered in the competition, including Choi Voi (Adrift); Dung Dot (Don’t Burn); Trang Noi Day Gieng (Moon at the Bottom of the Well); Chuyen Tinh Xa Xu (Passport to Love); Rung Den (Black Forest), and Giai Cuu Than Chet (Kiss of Death).

Around 1,000 delegates have arrived for the event which returns to the city after 26 years.

Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Tran Chien Thang and Deputy Chairwoman of the city People’s Committee Nguyen Thi Hong inaugurated the festival which has also attracted film industry people from Cambodia, China, Finland, South Korean, Laos and the US.

Thang hoped the festival would be a milestone in the development of the nation’s film industry and said he was happy that people in HCM City give cinema enthusiastic support.

Hong said, "In recent years many Vietnamese films have won international and regional prizes. It was a catalyst for the international integration of Vietnamese films."

Before the ceremony, a 12-minute documentary was screened on the development of Vietnamese cinema since its early days almost five decades ago, with a montage from the most important films through the period.

They included Mua Gio Chuong (Season of the Whirlwind, 1980), Chung Mot Dong Song (Sharing the Same River, 1959), Thuong Nho Dong Que (Nostalgia for the Countryside, 1995), Chi Tu Hau (Ms Tu Hau, 1963).

Some scenes from the cult 1978 film Canh Dong Hoang (Deserted Field) made by Giai Phong (Liberation) Film Studio were shown before they were performed by young artists Nguyet Anh and Vo Thanh Tam.

The film won the Golden Lotus for best feature film at the 5th Viet Nam Film Festival in 1980 and a Gold Medal at the 1981 Moscow International Film Festival.

Besides the Golden Lotus for best entry in each category, there will also be two Silver Lotus awards, and two Jury Award. The best feature film will be chosen by a vote by journalists.

The films are being screened since December 7th at Thang Long Cinema. The nine movies that have been shown so far have attracted big crowds, according to the organisers. — VNS
